St Peter's Church of England Primary School

We are a Nurturing School. Please read our report!

This term we were assessed for the National Nurturing Schools Award. This involved a rigorous process, including a detailed self-assessment, an in-depth review, and a full inspection day. During the visit, the assessor spoke with families, children and staff, ensuring that the views of our whole community were represented.

We are absolutely delighted to share the outcome of our recent National Nurturing Schools Programme assessment at St Peter’s.

The report is a wonderful celebration of the journey our school community has been on, recognising the strong, caring ethos that sits at the heart of everything we do. It highlights how the Six Principles of Nurture are truly embedded across school life, shaping our environment, our relationships and our approach to teaching and learning.

Inspectors praised the warm, inclusive atmosphere of the school, noting that children feel safe, valued and listened to, and that staff are deeply committed to supporting every child to thrive. The report also celebrates the strength of our partnerships with parents and carers, describing them as open, collaborative and central to the success of the school.

We are especially proud that the report recognises St Peter’s as a nurturing “hub” within the community, where families feel welcomed and involved, and where children are encouraged to develop confidence, responsibility and a strong sense of belonging.

We were delighted that our families recognised our school vision at the heart of our work.

As a result of this work, we are thrilled that the assessor has recommended St Peter’s for the National Nurturing Schools Award – a fantastic achievement for our whole school community.

We would strongly encourage all parents and carers to take the time to read the full report on our website. It captures beautifully what makes St Peter’s such a special place to learn and grow, and we hope you feel as proud of it as we do. You can read the full report here:

We are a Church School - but what does this mean?

Who we are as a School and how this has shaped our vision

Our Vision: Learning to Light the Way

“Let your light shine before others.” – Matthew 5:16

Our school vision is rooted in the teachings of Jesus and is inspired by the powerful image of salt and light.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks not to the powerful or privileged, but to a diverse and ordinary community—people from all walks of life who longed for change, healing, and hope. His message is one of transformation: that through love, people can bring about a better world, where relationships are restored and communities flourish.

Why ‘Light the Way’?

Jesus describes his followers as “the light of the world”—a light that brings clarity, hope, and direction. Without light, we cannot see; with it, we begin to understand, grow, and act with purpose.

At our school, we believe:

  • Every child has inherent value and purpose
  • Every individual can make a difference
  • We are all called to shine our light through our actions

This is not about recognition or reward. Instead, it is about living out faith through love, service, and integrity—what the Bible describes as faith in action (James 2).

Salt and Light: A Community of Purpose

Jesus also calls his followers “the salt of the earth.” Salt symbolises preservation, value, and God’s enduring promise. Together, these images remind us that we are:

  • A community that nurtures and supports one another
  • A place where everyone belongs and is valued
  • Individuals who can positively influence the world around us

We see ourselves as a visible community of hope, kindness, and responsibility, where every member is encouraged to shine.

Living Out Our Vision

“Learning to Light the Way” means putting our beliefs into action every day:

  • Serving others through acts of kindness, charity, and community projects
  • Building strong relationships rooted in respect, empathy, and compassion
  • Encouraging pupil leadership through peer mentoring and responsibility
  • Developing character—doing the right thing, even when it is difficult or it is not obvious to others
  • Exploring justice and fairness, helping pupils understand how they can make a difference

We encourage our pupils to think deeply about why they act in a certain way, not just what they do—fostering a sense of purpose that goes beyond reward or recognition.

Shining Beyond Ourselves

In a world shaped by many influences, we empower our pupils to become positive influencers—individuals who lead with kindness, stand up for fairness, and contribute to a better future.

Through this vision, we aim to develop young people who:

  • Recognise their own worth and the worth of others
  • Act with courage and compassion
  • Seek to bring light, hope, and goodness into the world

Our Commitment

At the heart of everything we do is a simple but powerful belief:

We are all called to shine.
And together, we can learn to light the way.

How we live and learn together

How our curriculum is underpinned by our theologically rooted Christian Vision

Collective Worship and spiritual moments at St Peter's

How our vision creates a culture where we treat each other well in school

How our vision creates an outward culture of justice and responsibility

How Religious education in our school helps our pupils to explore deeply, think critically and live wisely so they truly flourish.
