In this unit, pupils developed their ability to explore and refine ideas through drawing and design. They practised observational drawing, experimented with different materials and techniques, and created colour palettes and mood boards to communicate a theme. They learned to analyse and take inspiration from artists such as William Morris, and applied this knowledge to design and create repeating patterns. Pupils also developed an understanding of textile processes, including fabric printing methods, and used sketchbooks to evaluate and improve their work.

Living Land Show 6th May 2026

On Wednesday 6th May, Mercury Class enjoyed an exciting trip to the Living Land Show at the Kent Showground in Detling. This visit built on our Autumn Geography unit on food, offering pupils a hands-on experience of farming, agriculture, horticulture and the countryside. Throughout the day, the children met a variety of farm animals, sampled local produce, and watched impressive farm machinery demonstrations. A particular highlight was the entertaining display by some dancing sheep! With over 2,800 children attending from across the county, the event showcased the vital role local producers play in the UK’s food supply. Pupils also learnt why Kent is proudly known as the “Garden of England.” One pupil shared, “I loved seeing the animals up close and trying the fresh food—it made me realise how much work goes into what we eat!” Below is a selection of the many activities we explored and the new knowledge we gained during our visit.

What an amazing World Book Week we’ve had! Our school was bursting with imagination as the children curled up for magical campfire stories, invented hilarious food‑themed adventures (who knew carrots could be heroes?), and dropped EVERYTHING—yes, even mid‑wiggle—to read whenever the bell rang! The excitement reached new heights on Thursday 5th March, when the corridors filled with wizards, book characters, superheroes, and more for World Book Day. The costumes were brilliant, the smiles were even better, and the whole day felt like stepping into a storybook! What a fantastic, fun-filled week of reading magic!

Term 3 - Art - Painting and mixed media 12th Feb 2026

In this unit, the children explored painting by learning to mix tints and shades and investigating how adding black or white changed a colour. They applied this knowledge to create three‑dimensional effects in their artwork and experimented with different painting techniques to produce contrasting textures and marks. The children practised arranging objects to form an effective still-life composition, sketching their ideas carefully before creating a final painting. Throughout the unit, they focused on using colour, light, and shadow accurately, painting with care and control to produce recognisable and well‑structured still‑life artwork.

For our first unit in Geography this year we will be focusing on food, asking our big question of Where does our food come from? Looking at the distribution of the world’s biomes and mapping food imports from around the world; learning about trading fairly, focusing on Côte d’Ivoire and cocoa beans; exploring where the food for the children’s school dinners comes from and the argument of ‘local versus global’.
